Science Night: Dortmund Night of the Sciences

Information

Digital representation of the heart after a heart attack, on display in the immersive room at the Dortmunder U.

Hands-on science in the heart of the city!

Visitors can look forward to a varied program at Dortmunder U and at selected locations in the city (for example at DASA) from 4 pm. There will be hands-on stations for anyone interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), a stage program with science shows and science slams, excursions to the science districts, cultural and musical contributions from the universities, guided tours, live experiments, readings and lectures.

16.00 to 22.00: Ground floor of the Dortmunder U

On the first floor of the Dortmunder U, the storyLab kiU of Fachhochschule Dortmund and ISAS e.V. (Leibniz Institute for Analytical Sciences) invites you to decode the mysterious world of the immune system. The aim of the three-dimensional experience in image and sound: a change of perspective that goes straight to the heart. The storyLab kiU team enables visitors to experience the immune system after a heart attack outside of a research laboratory. In the immersive room at Dortmunder U, visitors can experience up close what only researchers can see with a light-sheet fluorescence microscope, for example, using various microscope images from the ISAS: After a heart attack, the inflamed heart tissue and the "overzealous" immune cells that have migrated into it become visible. The researchers want to use the images to understand the immune response during a heart attack and the resulting consequential damage. Their aim is to use the knowledge gained to identify molecular targets for drugs - and thus pave the way for new heart attack therapies.

At the Science Night, the participants would like to talk to anyone interested about their work as researchers and artists. They will be happy to answer questions from visitors of all ages after the immersive experience.

The exhibition "Hidden Barriers", which was created as part of the "DEINORT" project at Fachhochschule Dortmund, will open on level two (uzwei) at Dortmunder U at 5 pm. An exhibition about barriers and where to find them that is as barrier-free as possible.
