In an experimental workshop, students, lecturers and other university members from various disciplines explored the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on teaching and studies.
The interdisciplinary event on May 5, 2023 in the Innovation Lab(Opens in a new tab) at Fachhochschule Dortmund focused on AI models such as DALL-E and ChatGPT. In group work, the participants, including around 30 students, gained insights into the potential and challenges of AI by trying out the software themselves and developing practical application scenarios.
Classification of experts
Experts contributed their input on the classification of AI aspects. Farina Rensinghoff, research assistant at Westfälische Hochschule, addressed the topic of "How key competencies suddenly became future skills". Prof. Dr. Christoph Friedrich from the Faculty of Computer Science at Fachhochschule Dortmund explained what role AI systems could play in project- and problem-oriented teaching and what integration into study processes would be conceivable. Prof. Dr. Pamela Scorzin from the Faculty of Design presented her AI experiences in the artistic field. She presented the extent to which AI is capable of producing creative works, but also considered the risks.
Intensive cooperation
Prof. Dr. Stephan Weyers, Vice-Rector for Teaching and Studies, who moderated the workshop, deemed it a complete success: "The intensive collaboration between students and teaching staff showed that we can actively shape the opportunities and challenges of AI in education together. This experience encourages us to continue testing innovative formats in the future and to promote collaboration between students and lecturers."
Even after the official workshop program, the participants continued their discussions over pizza and drinks for a long time. The event was organized by students in collaboration with the Institute for Higher Education Didactics.
