Information

In design research, theory and practice, thinking is often given higher priority than the actual doing. As a result, design methodology mainly asks how design thinking can be supported. The nature of practical tools, on the other hand, often remains unreflected: Design tools are perceived as neutral means that must be subordinate to design thinking.

In reality, however, the practical tools used in design have a strong influence on how design problems can be tackled. Design tools open up spaces for action that guide design thinking along fixed paths. The choice of the right tool is therefore always a design decision that must be made consciously.

Against this background, Steffen Mitschelen (in his doctoral project at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne) is developing a didactic method entitled 'Meta-Tools' for the practical reflection of design tools. To this end, he conducts workshops with students from the perspective of interaction design, in which individual aspects of design tools and their effects on design work are made tangible in experimental settings. In the lecture, the project will be presented using a selection of such workshops.

Tobias Bieseke(Opens in a new tab) , research assistant at the Fachhochschule Dortmund in the storyLab kiU, will moderate the subsequent discussion.
