FAIRAFRIC - Film screening and tasting

Fast facts

Information

Responsible action often starts on a small scale - for example when purchasing products. The Sustainability Office (CSR Office) of Fachhochschule Dortmund invites you to a sweet but fair temptation and seeks a conversation about fair trade and sustainable production and how each individual can get involved.

Together with the Office for International Relations of the City of Dortmund and the Fritz-Henßler-Berufskolleg, the CSR Office of Fachhochschule Dortmund invites students, lecturers, employees and guests to a film screening and chocolate tasting in the large auditorium (room 135) of the Faculty of Design at Max-Ophüls-Platz. The film "Decolonize Chocolate 2" will be shown. The almost one-hour documentary accompanies the start-up "fairafric" during the construction of the chocolate factory in Ghana. Until now, chocolate has generally been produced in the global North.

For "fairafric", the focus is on shifting value creation to the country of origin of the raw material cocoa. Ten percent of Ghana's gross domestic product is generated by the cocoa industry. Around 800,000 households are dependent on the income from cocoa. Currently, 70 percent of the world's cocoa comes from West Africa, but less than one percent of the world's chocolate is produced there. The Munich-based start-up keeps the entire production process in the country. It not only sources the cocoa from the cocoa farms there, but also produces the chocolate from the bean to the packaged bar in Ghana. The company also produces for various partners in Germany, such as a black and yellow collection for BVB or a special bar for the "Fair Metropolis Ruhr" network, of which the City of Dortmund's Office for International Relations is also a member.

After the film, there will be an opportunity to taste the chocolate and talk about fair trade and fair production conditions. "We want to get into conversation with each other and discuss how everyone can get involved and what challenges may also exist," says Sebastian Kreimer from the Fachhochschule Dortmund CSR Office. In addition to students, lecturers and employees, the CSR Office is also expecting a good 70 guests from the Fritz-Henßler-Berufskolleg.
