Information
What the lack of green spaces has to do with heat is the subject of the "Hochschule vor Ort" series of public events organized by Fachhochschule Dortmund under the title "Beat the Heat". Participation in two lectures in the Nordstadtgalerie and a walk is free of charge.
Why does it tend to be hotter in cities than in the countryside? How does the phenomenon of the "urban heat island" arise in built-up areas, for example in Dortmund's Nordstadt district? Two lectures on August 22 and 23 will focus on the background to urban heat stress, its effects on the environment and human well-being.
Lectures at a glance (each from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.):
- Tuesday, August 22: "How are green spaces, heat & social situation connected? A spatial investigation" by Florian Klopfer (Faculty of Spatial Planning at TU Dortmund University) and Hannah Rosenbaum (District Mayor of Innenstadt-Nord)
- Wednesday, August 23: "Rising heat: opportunities and challenges in Nordstadt" by Sophie Arens (City of Dortmund Environmental Agency)
On August 30, neighbourhood manager Till Blackstein will start a walk at 4 pm at the Nordstadtgalerie to discover hot and cool places.
In addition, from August 17 to 31, posters and placards in the rooms and windows of the Nordstadtgalerie on Bornstraße will provide useful tips on how to deal with the heat. Anyone looking to cool off can look for nearby parks on a map of Dortmund. There will also be information on hands-on projects that are committed to a sustainably green Nordstadt.
