Information
The Faculty of Architecture at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts invites you to the exhibition "Muditar School, Mae Sot". As part of a teaching project in cooperation with the London architect Jan Glasmeier, 14 students are showing their designs for a school extension in Mae Sot (Thailand).
The city of Mae Sot, which belongs to the Tak region, is located in the north of Thailand. It is best known for its proximity to neighboring Myanmar. Due to the conflicts prevailing there, numerous migrants and refugees live in Mae Sot. Together with the London architect Jan Glasmeier, the extension to a school for Burmese refugee children was to be designed. In addition to the four existing classrooms for around 100 pupils, six further classrooms of varying sizes for a further 110 pupils were to be planned on the relatively small plot of land. The aim was to design a room program that could be used flexibly and would allow for an uncomplicated response to the current refugee situation. One particular challenge was an existing steel structure (18x6 m). The students were free to use it, adapt it to the design or demolish it. The design had to be climate-friendly, using mainly local building materials such as clay, reclaimed wood and bamboo. The design had to be chosen in such a way that the construction work could be carried out by non-professionals (residents and students). Another important aspect to be considered in the planning was the integration of sanitary facilities that can be operated independently of a sewage system. The task was carried out in teams of two students each.
