Prof. Dr. Juan Velásquez is full of energy

Prof. Dr. Juan Velásquez: Because I pass on my technical knowledge and professional experience to the students with enthusiasm and passion. In the lectures, I don't just reproduce the content of a presentation or a script. Supplementary highlights from practice are incorporated into the lecture. I describe a lecture as "good" if it fulfills the following criteria:

• well structured and clear
• understandable (didactically)
• interactive, so that I not only listen, but can also actively participate
• with practical relevance

For me, individual support means that students are taught according to their level of knowledge. For me, this means that lecturers have the ability to perceive the students' level of knowledge and respond to it.

Prof. Dr. Juan Velásquez: There are many aspects of my field that inspire me. So the question is not so easy to answer. However, I can say without a doubt that the combination of measurement and analysis (network calculation) of network events particularly excites me. To make it easier to understand, let me give you an example: a transformer is switched on and when it is switched on it is discovered that a very high overvoltage has occurred. Exciting questions at this point are: How can such overvoltages be measured in the grid? What is the cause of the overvoltage? What remedial measures are conceivable?

Prof. Dr. Juan Velásquez: The discovery of electromagnetic induction. Why? Because I have been working for years with transformers that work on the principle of electromagnetic induction. I am enthusiastic about the experiments of Michael Faraday (discoverer of electromagnetic induction). I would have had a lot of fun carrying them out myself.

Prof. Dr. Juan Velásquez: When we look at what resources and specialists are needed to implement the requirements for future networks, I ask myself what a realistic roadmap might look like and how we as a university can best get involved.

Another technical question that I have been working on for some time, but have not yet fully answered: How can the frequency-dependent impedance of grids as well as inverter-based systems be reliably measured?
