Students at the Faculty of Applied Social Studies are working with the Nordstadtliga and the BVB foundation "leuchte auf" to collect donations in kind for homeless people in Dortmund. The donations will go to the Gast-Haus on Rheinische Straße.

The campaign is part of the street worker project course at Fachhochschule Dortmund and is taking place for the second time. "In the course, we went out on the streets to talk to homeless people. It became clear that winter is approaching, it's getting cold, warm clothes, sleeping bags and sleeping mats are missing," says Mirza Demirović, lecturer at the Faculty of Applied Social Studies and project coordinator of the Nordstadtliga.

The guest house on Rheinische Straße confirms this. In addition to sleeping bags and sleeping mats, there is also a great demand for jeans. Sweatshirts, winter jackets, shoes, towels and toiletries are also needed.

Assembly point at the EFS 44

Anyone wishing to support the campaign can drop off donations in kind at the Fachhochschule Dortmund on the Emil-Figge-Straße (EFS) campus. Clean and intact items as well as hygiene articles are accepted. There is a particular need for hand cream, deodorant, shower shampoo and toothpaste (especially in small tubes) and nail clippers. The FH street workers will set up a collection point in the foyer of EFS 44 on several days for the drop-off:

  • Tuesday, October 29, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, November 05, 2024, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, November 12, 2024, from 12:00 to 13:30
  • Monday, November 18, 2024, from 16:00 to 18:30
  • Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Thursday, November 21, 2024, from 5.30 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, November 26, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

During their work on the streets, the students come into direct contact with the realities of life for homeless people. One homeless person reported: "I collect around 8 euros a day and have to pay 7.80 euros to be able to sleep in the men's shelter. There is usually nothing left for food and drink." In addition, blankets are often stolen from other people living on the street.

"Every jacket, blanket, sleeping mat or sleeping bag counts," emphasizes Mirza Demirović. "Together, we can alleviate the cold in winter." Anyone who would like to donate items outside of the campaign dates can contact the restaurant at Rheinische Straße 22 at any time.
