Fachhochschule Dortmund has received NRW Science Minister Ina Brandes for her inaugural visit. She was welcomed on April 28 by Deputy Rector Prof. Dr. Tamara Appel, who discussed current challenges in the university landscape with the Dortmund native.

In conversation with the Minister, Tamara Appel and the members of the Rectorate explained how Fachhochschule Dortmund is strategically positioning itself in view of demographic change and the shortage of skilled workers. "With future-oriented learning conditions for our currently more than 14,200 students, we are living up to the guiding principle 'We focus on students'," said the Deputy Rector. She announced that the profile of the University of Applied Sciences would be further sharpened. In view of the social demand for lifelong learning, practical further education is also gaining in importance as a field of activity.

During a subsequent tour, accompanied by lecturers and students, Ina Brandes had the opportunity to gain interesting impressions of various Fachhochschule Dortmund faculties at the Sonnenstraße location in Dortmund's Kreuzviertel district. She was impressed by a creatively prepared room in which the Faculty of Design presented its professional diversity using student work and screens.

Insights into information technology: wearing 3D glasses, Minister Ina Brandes followed the images from an endoscopic camera on a screen. Research assistant Matti Kaupenjohann explained the procedure.

The Faculty of Information Technology also presented the Minister with several innovative projects, some of which are interdisciplinary and realized in research networks, including in the fields of 3D endoscopy and autonomous driving, which also exemplified the forward-looking teaching at Fachhochschule Dortmund.

"Our universities of applied sciences make an invaluable contribution to North Rhine-Westphalia as a business location," said Minister Ina Brandes after her tour. "Young researchers work here on practical solutions that make people's lives better. The direct practical relevance in the training of skilled workers is a prerequisite for the success of our Business Studies."
