AKG Sponsorship Award 2023

Published

Students from the Faculty of Architecture won second prize in the AKG Sponsorship Award 2023 for their design "Veedelheimat - protected and integrated"

Now in its ninth year, the prize is aimed at students and graduates of architecture and interior design from all German-speaking educational institutions. The competition organizer AKG (Architekten für Krankenhausbau und Gesundheitswesen e.V.) set the task for the 2023 sponsorship award of developing and explaining an architectural concept that addresses the topic of "How do people with dementia live? Protected and integrated". The AKG sponsorship award is endowed with a total of 6,000 euros.

With their design "Veedelheimat - protected and integrated", Sude Baysal and Palwascha Raschid from the Faculty of Architecture at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts won 2nd prize worth €1,250.

"Dementia is a topic that will also increasingly affect architecture in the future," says Friederike Asche M.A. (Scientific Director of the BMBF research/teaching project "DEIN*ORT" on the topic of dementia). "When Prof. Reichle suggested working on this challenging topic with students in the seminar "Special area of building theory", it was clear to me that I would support her. It was the ideal way to combine teaching and research," reports Friedrike Asche. Ms. Asche introduced a specific focus on dementia and inclusion, which the students were able to explore using self-awareness methods. "In the seminar, we analyzed a specific location in Cologne with the students and examined its specific potential in the context of the competition task," says Prof. Diana Reichle. "The design by the two students, Ms. Baysal and Ms. Raschid, already caught our attention during the supervision with its consistent mix of generations and high design quality."

The jury was also impressed by the design concept of the two students:

"The submitted design presents a successful concept by bringing together different life situations and generations - an approach that is unfortunately not often seen implemented in a successful form these days. This allows the residents to stay in familiar, urban surroundings and is skillfully mixed and integrated within a harmonious multi-generational living environment. From an urban planning perspective, the approach of creating a new square situation in a peripheral urban location that integrates the building into its surroundings is positive. In this way, it also reflects the urban space in a balanced way in the floor plan, blends in with the surrounding buildings and skillfully integrates outdoor areas into the spatial program. The well-functioning mixed use extends over the individual storeys. The floor plans are neatly designed, clearly laid out and humanely tailored for people with dementia". (Excerpt from the jury report)

The official award ceremony will take place at the AKG spring meeting on April 28, 2023 in Heidelberg

The design was supervised by the teaching team Prof. Diana Reichle (Department of Building Theory and Design) and Friederike Asche M.A. (research/teaching project DEIN*Ort).
