Learning Chips Lab
The interdisciplinary research focus "Learning Chips Lab" of the Faculties of Information Technology, Electrical Engineering and the Institute for the Digital Transformation of Application and Living Domains (IDiAL) at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts is dedicated to the development of resource- and energy-efficient microelectronic systems for machine learning, in particular neural networks and deep learning. This research enables these artificial intelligence methods to be used in small embedded systems, for example in the areas of the Internet of Things, robotics and medical technology. The spokesperson of the research focus is Prof. Dr. Hendrik Wöhrle, Faculty of Information Technology. Other members are Prof. Dr. Michael Karagounis, Faculty of Information Technology, and Prof. Dr. Carsten Wolff, Faculty of Computer Science/Institute for the Digital Transformation of Application and Living Domains (IDiAL).

Cloud Energy Lab
Research is being conducted into ways of achieving a secure and sustainable energy supply as one of today's most pressing challenges as well as other energy technology issues through cloud-based networking of simulation models and (real) test benches. In an interdisciplinary real laboratory, the entire chain of effects from energy conversion (often also referred to as energy generation), storage, distribution and use is considered, whereby many relevant components (e.g. photovoltaics, wind energy, battery storage, hydrogen storage, fuel cells, electrolysers) are included. The spokesperson for the research focus is Prof. Dr. Martin Kiel, Faculty of Electrical Engineering. Other participants are Prof. Dr. Yves Rosefort, Prof. Dr. Vinod Rajamani, Prof. Dr. Markus Thoben and Prof. Dr. Sönke Gößling from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Prof. Dr. Torsten Füg from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

DigiTransPro - Digital Transformation Projects
Digital transformation is also a management task. Science distinguishes "digital transformation projects" from traditional IT projects, particularly due to the complexity, novelty and holistic nature of the transformation steps. The aim of the research focus "Digital Transformation Projects" is to research the specifics of digitalization projects and to develop new, suitable project management methods. The spokesperson for the research focus is Prof. Dr. Carsten Wolff, Faculty of Computer Science/Institute for the Digital Transformation of Application and Living Domains (IDiAL). Other members are Prof. Dr. Jan Christoph Albrecht, Prof. Dr. Marco Boehle, and Prof. Dr. André Dechange, Faculty of Business Studies.
