What makes us special
Intensive exchange between theory and practice
The name says it all. Applied Social Sciences means that our study programs have a high practical relevance and that you acquire the necessary specialist knowledge through application-oriented projects. A regular and intensive exchange between theory and practice is important to us. We offer events and conferences for this purpose.
You can apply for state recognition as a social pedagogue or social worker at Fachhochschule Dortmund with your Bachelor's certificate, provided you can prove your personal suitability with an extended police clearance certificate. You will then receive a certificate which employers often find important and which is therefore helpful for your professional career.
City & Region
Exchange with social work organizations
In North Rhine-Westphalia and especially in the Ruhr region, which includes Dortmund, there are many conurbations and densely populated cities. This brings with it a number of challenges, such as poverty, unemployment and integration. There is therefore a great deal of practical experience here thanks to numerous different social work providers. A regular exchange of experience between practitioners and academics is therefore a matter of course in the Department of Applied Social Sciences.
Social work experts report on their practical experience in our courses and you visit the organizations on site. If you study with us, you will get to know many actors from the field at an early stage. This can even lead to ideas and exciting prospects for your professional future.
The Office for Regional Social Work Research (AreSo) was founded to bring together practitioners from the region with students and lecturers from our faculty. Social work providers, for example, contact the University of Applied Sciences with research inquiries. AreSo coordinates this, resulting in practice-relevant research projects in which the students of our department are involved through project tasks, among other things. In addition, the department organizes specialist conferences together with Dortmund institutions.
Internationality
In order to gain practical experience and state recognition, you need proof of practical experience. You can achieve this with a semester abroad. Planning a semester abroad naturally raises many questions. We can advise and support you in all aspects of this.
Internationalization is also an important topic in the Department of Applied Social Sciences. That's why we organize our department accordingly.
Counseling and support
Mentoring, e-learning and career service
Fachhochschule Dortmund offers its students a unique advisory concept. In the first two semesters, personal mentors are on hand to guide and support you in order to facilitate a successful start and progression of your studies. In the second semester, you will have a progress meeting so that any problems can be identified as early as possible. In addition, an extensive advisory network, e-learning offers and the Maths HelpDesk provide support.
The Career Service at Fachhochschule Dortmund also offers you numerous opportunities to further develop your skills and hone your personal profile. For example, you can develop your key social or methodological skills and expand your foreign language and IT knowledge in interdisciplinary events.
Studying as a phase of life
What else we have to offer
Fachhochschule Dortmund supports students who have responsibility for children or care for relatives. We offer childcare and advise you on financial and organizational issues.
The health of our students is important to us, so they can take advantage of the university sports program, among other things. Our water dispensers are also available free of charge after sport.
We want students to look beyond the confines of the university. For example, you can attend performances at Theater Dortmund free of charge with your student ID.
