The entrance examination serves to determine whether the subject-specific and methodological requirements for studying the desired study program are met. The content of the examination is general and subject-related knowledge.
The entrance examination consists of written and oral parts.
Please note:
An independent entrance examination is conducted for the Bachelor's degree programs in the Faculty of Applied Social Studies (see b.). The central entrance examination is offered for the other study programs (see a.). Here you will also find the sample exams and exercises for listening comprehension.
a. Information on the central entrance examination (incl. sample examinations)
Knowledge in the subjects German, mathematics and English is tested as part of a central written test procedure of the North Rhine-Westphalian universities of applied sciences. Alternatively, the English module can be proven by means of language tests (e.g. TOEFL, TOEIC, Cambridge Certificate, telc) at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
After successfully passing the written parts of the examination, an oral, subject-related examination must be taken.
Graduates of the entrance examination can apply online for a specific study program using the average grade achieved in the normal allocation procedure.
Requirements for participation in an entrance examination
- Completion of at least two years of recognized vocational training in accordance with the Vocational Training Act or the Crafts Code or other federal or state law
- proof of at least three years of professional activity (also in a profession not corresponding to the training). Equivalent are the main responsible and independent management of a family household and the upbringing of minor children within the meaning of § 25 para. 5 BAföG or the care of a family member. Part-time employment (approx. 20 hours/week). For scholarship holders of the federal government's advancement program, proof of the above-mentioned employment of two years is sufficient.

b. Further information on the entrance examination in the Faculty of Applied Social Studies
The entrance examination for the Bachelor's degree programs of the Faculty of Applied Social Studies consists of a written and an oral part. General and subject-related content is tested in both the written and oral parts of the examination. The examination serves to determine whether the applicant meets the professional and methodological requirements for studying the desired study program in Social Work at Fachhochschule Dortmund.
Among other things, the examination relates to the ability to reason, attention and concentration, job-related social skills and individual resilience with regard to the desired field of practice. In addition, tasks relating to academic text comprehension and open questions relating to the understanding of methods, fields of action and supporting structures in social work are to be completed in writing. The written entrance examination takes place in groups and under supervision.
In addition, general knowledge, including language skills (German and English), basic mathematical understanding, a basic understanding of political and social sciences and an understanding of subject-related contexts are included in the examination to the extent that they are necessary for studying social work.
The results of the written examination are summarized on a results sheet and, together with the CV and letter of motivation, form the starting point for the oral part of the examination.
