What is it about?
Medical Informatics deals with topics related to medicine and informatics. A study program that qualifies students for future-oriented and crisis-proof professional fields and brings together two interesting and complex subject areas.
Profile of the study program
Medical informatics deals with questions such as
- What are electronic patient records?
- How do electronic patient records help to provide better care for sick people?
Solutions at the interface between people, medicine and innovative technology
Modern healthcare is inconceivable without intelligent software and networked devices. The computer tomograph produces digital images of the inside of the human body, which the clinic sends to the GP's surgery with a click. Diabetics can manage their condition independently with a blood glucose meter and app. In rural areas, telemedicine supports the care of sick people.
Extensive areas of application
Three examples that show the diverse areas of application of medical informatics. It works at the interface between computers, people, medicine, care and innovative technology. This includes image and signal processing as well as software development and the management of medical information systems. In the Bachelor's study program, for example, you will deal with electronic patient records and how they help to provide better care for sick people.
Laying the foundations and deepening
In the first three semesters, you will acquire all the essential basics of computer science and learn how to program, among other things. You will then expand your knowledge of software technology, databases and IT infrastructure. Mathematics is also an important component. At the same time, you will learn the basics of medical informatics and the fundamentals of human medicine. To complete your professional qualification, business administration and technical English are on the curriculum.
The six-semester course, or seven semesters with a practical semester, offers specializations in the fields of telematics and telemedicine, visualization and interaction for medicine, signal and image processing for medicine as well as data protection and security.
Gain experience in medical informatics projects
As you progress, you will work on a project-related and interdisciplinary basis. For example, you can develop an ultrasound simulation in virtual space. Medical programming and mathematical knowledge will be combined. This includes extracting and measuring bones from X-ray images or generating 3D objects from magnetic resonance imaging data sets.
Practical semester in a software company
If you have opted for the seven-semester study option, you will complete an entire practical semester in a software company, hospital or other institution related to medical informatics before graduating. This allows you to put your knowledge into practice during your studies and get to know everyday working life.
Bachelor of Science
After successfully completing the program, you will receive a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree.
Specializations in the study program
Medical Informatics offers specializations in the following areas:
- Telematics and telemedicine
- Visualization and interaction
- Signal and image processing in medicine
- Data protection and data security
