Content
This chapter primarily deals with the starting conditions of the third phase of the City of the Future competition (initiated and funded by the BMBF) in Gelsenkirchen with regard to the genesis of the educational concept of "Future Education". Education for sustainable development, global citizenship education, participation and socio-spatial education are key points of reference. First, the historical development of the Gelsenkirchen concept and its components is traced, summarized and theoretically deepened or sharpened with the help of a subsequent literature search. Subsequently, both the real-world laboratories and the subdivided building blocks (also called real-world laboratory experiments) are described, i.e. the setting of the third phase, and thus the practical research field, are examined in more detail and an interim summary is drawn with regard to "future education" in the context of the practical level. In addition, the planned research and development process is presented from the perspective of the research field of "future education" in order to then draw an overall conclusion and provide an outlook on what the term "future education" and its possible dynamic further development in Gelsenkirchen should be oriented towards.
