Can clothing transcend the boundaries of fashion and unfold as a form of art? No creative medium is as close to us as our clothes, but hypes and trends make them appear fast-moving, superficial and unsustainable, which contradicts the more universal messages of a non-(market)conformist art. However, contemporary designers also combine haute couture with the means of fine art, thematize political messages and avant-garde concepts and thus blur the line between art and fashion. Similar to the performative practices of contemporary art, fashion art thus functions as a staging platform that questions social norms and rules and recreates bodies through visual narratives.
