The interdisciplinary anthology "Acoustic Turn" by Petra Maria Meyer was published in 2008 and drew attention to a previously underestimated branch of the senses. Since then, the topics surrounding sound design have expanded, and it is known that well thought-out sound design in elaborate radio plays, films, scenography, e-mobility, podcasts and immersive audiovisual design forms leads to higher media quality and multisensory perception. Acoustic studies have emerged as a scientific field that combines musicology and media studies. Recent publications such as the "Handbuch Sound" (Morat and Ziemer 2018), the "Handbuch der Filmmusik" (Kloppenburg 2012) and books on sound design have significantly expanded the discourse in German-speaking countries. In addition, translations of fundamental works by Michel Chion, such as "Audio-Vision" (1990 in French, 1993 in English, 2018 in German), have contributed to the growth of this field. Internationally, numerous publications on the topics mentioned below have become standard works.
This special edition "Acosutic pathways - After the turn" is the result of thorough research and findings by renowned researchers, professors and specialists in the field of sound. It was curated by Jörg U. Lensing, Professor of Sound Design at the Fachhochschule Dortmund, who also works as a director and composer for theater and film.
The articles and essays selected for this issue benefit greatly from his expertise.
