Exhibition "WATER Scarcity or abundance?
Water as an artistic idea and material" 20.8.-10.9.2023

Under this title, the Kunst- und Kulturverein will open the exhibition on August 19, 2023 at 2 p.m. with a wide variety of visual and thematic approaches to this unique material.

In the former gymnasium of the "Alte Schule", 11 artistic positions will be shown that approach the material and element 'water' through various artistic media: Painting, photography, object, sound installations, video and documentaries. In the outdoor area, in the courtyard and in the immediate vicinity of the 'Alte Schule', a further 10 artistic installations on the theme of water will be created, linking the grounds of the 'Alte Schule' more closely with the town of Baruth and its inhabitants.

Water, wood and sand are raw materials that, until recently, seemed to be available in almost unlimited quantities in Brandenburg. The sentence uttered by Tesla boss Elon Musk: "... Look around you. There is so much water in this region ... (look around you, there is so much water here ...)" corresponded to a common perception of Brandenburg, also among the population. However, the establishment of the Tesla Gigafactory near Berlin, with its huge consumption of fresh water, made people aware that our resources are finite. Environmentalists are fighting against the unlimited extraction of groundwater. This change in awareness, from a lack of concern to a critical concern, goes hand in hand with a general change in the use and handling of substances and raw materials that are needed in large quantities for Business Studies and agricultural purposes. There is now a consensus that not only fossil energy reserves, but almost all raw materials urgently needed by the economic cycle are only available in limited quantities. The past years of drought are having an impact on water reserves with constantly falling water levels. It is true that there are regional differences in water resources and seasonal fluctuations. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that less and less water will be available in the long term.

General background to the exhibition:

In cooperation with the association "BRIK e.V.- Baruther Raum für Innovationskultur", which is also based in the Alte Schule Baruth, the art and culture association Alte Schule Baruth e.V. has set itself the task in recent years of focusing more strongly on these tangible local issues.

With the WATER / WOOD / SAND trilogy, the art and culture association Alte Schule Baruth e.V. has set itself the goal for 2023-2025 of taking a closer look at the town of Baruth, its location, its past and, above all, its future. Three themes were identified in advance for the Baruth location: a trilogy: water, wood and sand, are the themes we want to explore artistically, discursively and site-specifically in exhibitions and events in the years 2023 - 2025.

All three materials are specific resources for Brandenburg. Last but not least, Baruth's economic prosperity is based on the deposits of water and wood and, if we think of Glashütte, also sand.
