A young institution with 100 years of tradition: that is Fachhochschule Dortmund. The apparent contradiction can be quickly resolved. Although Fachhochschule Dortmund was officially founded in 1971, its oldest predecessor institution, the "Königliche Werkmeisterschule für Maschinenbauer", opened its doors back in 1890. However, the basic idea has not changed over the years: Studies and teaching are geared towards solving application-oriented problems and tasks, experienced professors guarantee the connection to practice and today enable students to study with a wide range of prospects in nine faculties with a total of 20 study programs: From Design, Computer Science and Engineering to Social Sciences and Business Studies, around 8500 students are currently enrolled at Fachhochschule Dortmund. Dortmund, with its population of around 600,000, not only has an efficient industry, affordable shopping facilities, a rich cultural offering and an enthusiastic soccer audience: surrounded by 50 percent green spaces, future-oriented high-tech companies and competent service companies with a focus on the media, software and insurance industries, for example, are increasingly growing up here. Together with the university and other research institutions, the University of Applied Sciences supports this development with an important "working capital": well-trained specialists. For example, in modern information and communication technology - keyword: multimedia -, the construction of components for the factory of tomorrow or the development of systems for environmental protection. New to the FH's range of courses are the study programs "Vehicle and Traffic Engineering", "Building Systems Engineering" and two combined study programs (distance learning courses with attendance phases for working professionals) for business informatics and administrative business administration. But it is not only technology and Business Studies that determine the range of courses on offer: the University of Applied Sciences also takes its responsibility for the future into account by providing training in the social sector and in creative and artistic fields.
