About the project
The topic - within the project seminar "Master Resource IP.R 1-2" presented here - comprises a student competition organized by the Leipziger Messe's "Messeakademie Denkmal 22", which is held every four years on the topic of "DESIGNING IN THE HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT-ALTBAU.UMBAU. NEUBAU", which seeks convincing concepts and solutions for the use of valuable listed buildings in a historical context. The main task of the competition presented here was to to design a new depot and workshop building in the context of a listed stables building at a historically complex location - the Altenburg Castle Park in Thuringia - which was also to be directly linked in cubature and location to the historical predecessor building "former coach house" and, in its function as a contemporary archive and workshop building, was to act respectfully both towards the existing historical building stock (Marstall cultural monument) and towards the urban space and the historical park and add another important function to the entire museum area.
Architectural solutions were therefore sought for a replacement building for the former coach house, which would develop the historic site independently and respectfully - without imitating the old building as a reconstruction and without fashionable attitudes - and which would be carefully integrated into the historic "Altenburg Castle Park" complex, which is steeped in history. The new building was also to meet the current and future technical and functional requirements of an archive for the storage and restoration of sensitive graphics and (art) objects and also incorporate sustainable aspects. In addition to the appropriateness of the means, the discussions in the in-depth design seminar focused on simple and cost-effective building and construction methods that require little technical effort and can also provide the necessary climate stability with simple technology.
