Research
Research "Metal construction"
New structural shapes for lightweight steel construction
Prof. Dr. Helmut Hachul's research focuses on the facetted spatial folding structures made of sheet steel. With them, completely new, free-form structures are possible with minimal effort, which do not require any additional support structure. They are based on research into geodesic domes by the American Richard Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983), which has been continuously developed further since 1998 as the basis for the company's own research. The new construction principles are constantly being optimized and offer a very economical and aesthetic addition to conventional construction methods for free-form surfaces. Business Studies also focus on cost-effectiveness, from the CAD-CAM production chain to detailing in line with material and building physics.
Innovative metal construction
In addition to known and proven products and construction methods in lightweight steel construction, the main focus here is on the integration of alternative technologies in building construction, from primary forming to forming, joining and coating. Marginal areas such as vehicle and aircraft construction are systematically analyzed and the transferability of the technology is tested and verified.
Research projects
The Department of Architecture + Metal Construction is involved in various research and development projects in the field of innovative and constructive lightweight steel construction in cooperation with specialist companies, institutes and international research partners.

Teaching concept
Metal construction has a long tradition in architecture. Designers such as Jean Prouvé and R. B. Fuller recognized that, in addition to conventional components such as corrugated and trapezoidal profiles, other constructions could be generated from the easily formable semi-finished product. Their realizations range from furniture and system houses to large domed buildings. They prove that intelligent planning can break new ground in architecture.
In view of new technologies and construction possibilities, metal construction still offers an exciting field of activity today. While industrially manufactured components are characterized more than ever by their efficiency and durability, a wide range of tasks awaits future architects in both the structural and technological fields.
New structural approaches, such as the faceting of complicated shapes, are one of the options for implementing non-orthogonal forms in the built environment. Questions of aesthetics and Business Studies are thus covered in equal measure. New technologies such as hydroforming also allow today's planners to strive for completely new and efficient solutions in the component sector.
Of course, the energy optimization of façades and roofs also plays a major role, which is becoming increasingly refined in the course of sustainability. System-integrated approaches such as solar thermal energy or photovoltaics can help to convert purely "usable areas" for energy generation.
Architecture + Metal Construction is characterized by the direct involvement of students in the projects. In addition to theoretical considerations, the aim is always to establish a link to practice, which ideally leads to a joint implementation on a 1:1 scale. Networking with cooperation partners from the region is a good starting point for this. While students on the Bachelor's degree course primarily study the basics, students on the Master's degree course in Architecture + Metal Construction can deepen their knowledge and advance into research.
