  • International Summer School "School as a Social Hub. Interactions within a Neighborhood"

As part of the Erasmus+ BIP (Blendend Intensive Program), the international summer school "School as a Social Hub. Interactions within a Neighborhood" took place at the Faculty of Architecture. Ten students and two lecturers from each of the Erasmus partner universities TU Brno, Czech Republic, and Vilnius Tech, Lithuania, took part in this program. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Christiane Fülscher and Lorena Castell Alegria, they worked together with UAS students on the question of how school buildings can take on an even stronger role in urban society as central locations in their districts. Specifically, the students worked in mixed groups to develop a concept for short-term interventions and long-term conversion strategies for the Oesterholz elementary school in Dortmund's Nordstadt district.
The interdisciplinary and international collaboration gave the participants valuable new perspectives and insights into the design of schools as social hubs. Next year, the three Erasmus partner universities are planning a joint BIP at the TU Brno in the Czech Republic.

  • DAAD-HAW - Fact Finding Mission to North America

Prof. Reinhild Schultz-Fölsing from the Faculty of Architecture took part in the DAAD Fact Finding Mission to North America from October 20 to 26 as one of 13 representatives of German HAWs. In Toronto, the program included Toronto Metropolitan University, the University of Toronto and Humber Polytechnic. Among other things, information about the internationalization strategies of Canadian universities and offers for multi-week summer schools for international students were of interest. In Detroit, Wayne State University, the TechTown District and the Newlab@Michigan Central were visited. In addition to a wealth of information about Detroit's urban development, the focus was on research support and the promotion of start-ups. The trip concluded with a visit to the Cornell Tech Centers on Roosevelt Island in New York and CUNY (The City University of New York), an association of 25 colleges with around 225,000 students.
At a reception at the German House in New York, contacts were made with representatives of other universities and organizations. The fact-finding mission provided a good insight into the Canadian and US university system and potential collaborations.
