Following the fatal police shooting of 16-year-old Mouhamed D. in Dortmund's Nordstadt district, political scientist Prof. Dr. Dierk Borstel makes a suggestion in the debate about clarification: "If you want to regain trust, you should form an independent commission in addition to the standard procedure between the police authorities and have the case investigated with external expertise."
Dierk Borstel suggests that such a commission should include "renowned people such as the former Minister of Justice Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger". "Together with independent researchers and retired, uninvolved and experienced police officers, they could assess the case and inform the public." This is not planned and there are certainly legal hurdles, admits the researcher, who researches and teaches at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. "Nevertheless, I would welcome it in terms of strengthening the rule of law, and it could also be beneficial for social peace."
