The school year ended with a visit: before the summer vacations, the tenth graders at Anne-Frank-Gesamtschule tried their hand at various disciplines under the guidance of the StudyScouts. With the "StudyVisit" format, the StudyScouts give pupils the opportunity to experience scientific content first-hand in two-hour workshops.
As students at Fachhochschule Dortmund, the StudyScouts provide practical insights into the courses on offer at eye level. The pupils had a free choice in the workshops: architecture(Opens in a new tab) , medical informatics(Opens in a new tab) , communication design(Opens in a new tab) or social work(Opens in a new tab) ? The StudyScouts provided general initial information about studying at the university as well as an impression of their personal life at the university.
Urban planning in architecture
In schools it is the large classrooms, in churches the tall bell towers: each type of building is characterized by a functional design. The pupils discovered what this means for architectural planning and the spatial image of a city when they designed their own 1:100 scale model of a city. By stacking small wooden cubes, a wide variety of building types were created, which were then placed on a panel with marked green spaces and streets.
"Jute" jute bags in the communication design workshop
In the communication design workshop, the pupils literally had space for their own ideas or stamp designs on unprinted jute bags. To create unique stamps, the students wrapped small wooden blocks with thick yarn. Dip the wooden blocks in paint, press them onto the jute bags and the specially designed bag was ready! After a brief introduction to color theory, the students knew how different colors work.
Racing robots in (medical) informatics
From imaging procedures such as computer tomography to the digital documentation of medical data: The diverse role that computer science plays in the world of medicine was demonstrated to the pupils in the workshop on medical computer science. The students playfully experimented with programming two Lego robots and tried to find out what kind of sensors they use to detect obstacles.
Resources in social work
By interpreting the apparent character weaknesses of well-known film characters as strengths in context, the pupils trained their ability to adopt an appreciative attitude towards others. The students also reflected on their individual strengths and resources that help them to overcome problem situations.
