Pupils explore technical faculties

Published

Among other things, the students stopped off at the neuroscience and medical technology laboratory.

The Fachhochschule Dortmund welcomed almost an entire year 11 class from Brünninghausen Comprehensive School to a special taster event: the "Pupils' Day" gave 52 young visitors exciting insights into the technical faculties on offer at the Sonnenstraße location.

In view of the shortage of skilled workers, those who study programs in the STEM subjects have very good job prospects. Prof. Dr. Stephan Weyers, Vice-Rector for Teaching, Studies and International Affairs, pointed this out to the students in his welcoming address. He also emphasized how application-oriented studying at Fachhochschule Dortmund is: "Today you can see for yourself how students benefit from the practical experience of our lecturers." According to the motto "We focus on students", it is also important for the university to provide optimal learning conditions. "This also includes support services such as the Maths HelpDesk."

The students then explored the laboratories of the three participating Faculties of Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Mechanical Engineering as well as the FabLab maker space in groups. The guests also followed lectures and solved quiz questions about the Sonnenstrasse location in a campus rally. Finally, Sandra Rüffin from the Central Student Advisory Services (ZSB) team and student counselors from the faculties were on hand to answer questions about the range of courses on offer at the university.

Impressions from the pupils' day

Devin Kunze, research assistant at the Institute for Higher Education Didactics and coordinator of the "Brückenprojekt Mathematik" (Mathematics Bridge Project), was in charge of organizing the "Schüler*innen-Tag". The aim of this project is to prepare pupils from selected schools in Dortmund for STEM studies by teaching and deepening their knowledge of mathematics. The cooperation partner is the Regional Education Office of the City of Dortmund. Some of the tutors trained for this from the UAS were also on hand to accompany the groups on the "Pupils' Day".
