"Back to University" was the motto for around 100 people on 11.10.2023 at the Faculty of Applied Social Studies at this year's "Practice meets UAS" day. The majority of participants were social work professionals who work in various social work institutions. However, there were also students present who interrupted their lecture-free time for this special student day.
Instructor meeting in the anniversary year
"In our anniversary year, we wanted to show our practice instructors what studying social work looks like today. We also wanted to create spaces where professionals and students can discuss topics related to social work together," says Annika Zemke(Opens in a new tab) from the Practice Office(Opens in a new tab) of the Faculty of Applied Social Studies, which organizes the annual "Practice meets UAS" event. The Dean Prof. Dr. Katja Nowacki(Opens in a new tab) welcomed the first-year students, after which the Bachelor's degree course in Social Work and the specific course content were presented. Afterwards, there were a total of 24 courses to choose from and at the Market of Opportunities, interested parties were able to find out about selected offers from Fachhochschule Dortmund. Of course, there was also a traditional student meal in the canteen. The faculty members, many of whom are also alumni of the faculty, were delighted to be back at the university and to take part in courses again.
A pre-opening of the exhibition "75 Years of Social Work in Dortmund"(Opens in a new tab) offered participants the opportunity to reminisce and discuss developments in practice and higher education outside of the "timetable".
Although Fachhochschule Dortmund only celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, the training of social workers has been taking place in Dortmund for 75 years.
