Students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering were given an exciting insight into a central control center for the secure supply of electricity in Germany: they visited the main control room of the transmission system operator Amprion in Brauweiler, a district of Pulheim in the Rhein-Erft district.
The main control room forms the heart of the grid management and monitoring of the West German extra-high voltage grid. This is where grid stability, energy flows and system services are controlled in real time. The excursion in March 2025 offered students on the "Electrical Energy Sources" Master's course interesting insights into the practical aspects of grid management combined with the challenges of the energy transition.
The group of students was accompanied by Prof. Dr. Martin Kiel and research assistant Leon Speith as well as honorary professor Dr. Hans-Christoph Funke. For the latter, the visit was also his farewell from active teaching after many years of commitment to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences.
