Contents

The MAPho 4.4 module focuses on the expressive possibilities of other photographic dialects, such as documentary, editorial or artistic photography. The aim is to open up opportunities for students to find adequate solutions in the various artistic fields. This is supported by the teaching of specific communication strategies such as the image in space or in digital media.

Learning outcomes/competences

After successfully completing this module, students will be able to analyse and critically evaluate the function of photography in the respective application context, use strategies of staged or documentary photography for project work, distinguish and apply the narrative components of presentation methods and project management, systematize, analyse and catalog extensive photographic material.

Contents

The photography module Media Context I focuses on the role of photography as a document or staging and its contextualization in the creative dimensions. This also includes narrative and/or (self-)staging strategies within presentation contexts. At the end of the second semester, the design, execution, public presentation at the university as well as documentation and evaluation of a "model project", which is intended to serve as a model for the later extensive Master's project. Here, students should be able to apply the structural aspects of project management.

Teaching methods

Seminars in small groups, accompanied by three to four cross-seminar colloquia. This will be accompanied by block events, lectures and workshops with (international) lecturers, speakers and practitioners from various photographic application areas, Image in Space and trade fair presentations.

Contents

Theory Module I focuses on contextualization and methodological criticism. In the theory courses, which also test critical writing, important foundations are laid for the development of complex concept papers and independent projects. Above all, the conceptual specification and communicative competence of photographic presentation and argumentation are deepened.

Contents

In addition to preparing the Master's project, the 3rd semester is dedicated to authorship and the specification of photographic strategies and dialects. In addition to preparing the student's own Master's project, it includes the deepening of the second photographic focus in the differentiation of a photographic attitude in media use. Professional core competencies such as networking, customer care and self-marketing are learned as well as the development of media presentations in the strategies of digital media, sound/AV and book.

Contents

The module Media Context II deals with dramaturgy, language and

design in the photographic field. The corresponding seminars, as well as the events of the project-accompanying workshop, are designed to prepare and guide students for the Master's project and support them in finding their individual topics against the background of a sustainable personal profile as the basis for the professional career they are aiming for.
In the subject area of curation, curatorial and editorial exercises are also carried out in the various application contexts.

  • assess aesthetic concepts and locate them in relation to current trends in photography
  • assess the consequences of photographic staging of reality
  • deepen strategies for the implementation of visual argumentation and narration
  • reflect on and update the social significance of the photographic medium in the media and technology network

Contents

Thematization of authorship and staging and questions of ethics in the media context. The knowledge of methodological criticism and critical writing acquired in the seminars of the 2nd semester is expanded and applied to own texts and critical reviews. The development of visual language and conceptual design as an independent, creative achievement of photographic competence is concretized in relation to the professional areas of application (production, reproduction, archiving).

  • present themselves and their work in written project presentations appropriate to the target group (for exhibitions, competitions or tenders)
  • deal with competing demands in terms of time, including self-study and critical assessment of project progress
  • apply self and time management techniques such as goal definition, planning and evaluation in relation to project work

Contents

The learning objective of this module is to develop a comprehensive profile in the desired professional field. This is achieved through an essential competitive analysis and a positioning strategy. In addition to teaching media law, individual concepts for profiling are developed, such as presence in professional networks, development of a CI, design and creation of websites, newsletters, press releases, brochures, as well as professional concept papers for tenders, project planning or unsolicited applications.
