Internationalization at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts
For Fachhochschule Dortmund, internationalization is, on the one hand, a reaction to the international education market, in which internationality and international competence as quality aspects are an indispensable part of a university's claim and contribute significantly to its competitiveness.
On the other hand, an international professional environment requires graduates to have a minimum level of international competence, otherwise the necessary level for an academic education will not be achieved.
Research is also becoming increasingly internationally oriented, especially at EU level. International networking of researchers is a prerequisite for sustainable research and necessary to ensure the academic level, especially for Master's education at Fachhochschule Dortmund.
Intercultural skills are indispensable for the personal development of students, lecturers and staff in the modern and globalized world. Interculturality and international students at the university are valued and seen as an enrichment.
Mobility in study & practice
The university strives to expand the mobility of students in the 1st/2nd study cycle in the form of:
- semesters abroad
- internships abroad
- practical semesters abroad
- or other forms of study abroad.
In particular, non-curricular semesters abroad at qualified universities abroad or voluntary internships abroad are generally desired and are supported by both intensive counseling and financial incentives.
Fachhochschule Dortmund has a long-standing and successful cooperation with international partners in first and second cycle study programs, including double degree programs.
Fachhochschule Dortmund as a place of study for international students
In order to increase the attractiveness of Dortmund as a study location for students from partner universities, new or alternative teaching methods are to be developed in order to contribute to increasing international mobility.
International case study workshops focus on both the target group of international university lecturers and students, and deal with the content and methodology of case study didactics.
Another alternative, internationally oriented form of teaching is the Cross Border Management Projects. Here, practical relevance is combined with internationality. Real companies assign consulting projects to international student teams from different countries. This form of cooperation between universities and companies represents a knowledge alliance in the broadest sense.
This form of cooperation can lead to a more far-reaching partnership between the participating universities and companies, which promotes new learning opportunities and new qualifications, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Some providers of general and vocational education and companies are already long-standing partners at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts in the development of new industry-specific curricula (dual study programs).
Mobility of students and teachers
The mobility of students and teaching staff is to be further expanded and is a priority; Intensive Programs (IP) are to be applied for together with partner universities. Long-standing collaborations in IP programs will be continued.
The mobility of Master's students at Fachhochschule Dortmund is to be supported and facilitated.
Fachhochschule Dortmund is a member of the EUA and thus underlines the importance of research/scientific cooperation. Previous collaborations (Eureka/ITEA) within the framework of Horizon2020 are to be intensified, as participation in research projects also creates content for joint new programs and motivates more mobility and internationality.
