"WiLMo": Business informatics for everyone

Published

On their YouTube channel, the project partners have made more than 180 instructional videos for business informatics publicly available.

Want to become a business IT specialist in 180 videos? This is now possible on the "WiLMo" YouTube channel. Experts from Fachhochschule Dortmund and their project partners have made extensive teaching and learning materials available there - free of charge for anyone interested.

For this project, lecturers in business informatics from six NRW universities have joined forces and built up a large pool of open educational resources (OER) over the course of two years. Much of this can be found on the project YouTube channel(www.fh.do/WiLMo)(Opens in a new tab) . Further content specifically for students and lecturers is available on the university learning platform ILIAS and also on the project website at www.fh.de/WiLMo-OER(Opens in a new tab) .

Prof. Dr. Marcel Hoffmann

"The lessons on the YouTube channel form a substantial part of the Bachelor's degree course in Business Informatics and there is no other digital material on this subject in such a bundled form," says Prof. Dr. Marcel Hoffmann. He teaches at the Faculty of Computer Science at Fachhochschule Dortmund and was involved in the "WiLMo" project. As did Prof. Dr. Uwe Schmitz from the Faculty of Business Studies. Together they created the lessons on the topic of "Selecting and introducing business application systems". Business application systems enable the collection, storage, evaluation and exchange of data in companies and are tailored to the respective business processes.

Prof. Dr. Uwe Schmitz

"With the teaching and learning materials, we enable our students to familiarize themselves with the topics independently of the lectures," says Prof. Schmitz. At the same time, it enables students to learn on the job through self-study beyond the university. "And we lecturers have also strengthened our network through the project and received ideas and suggestions for our own lectures."

The Ministry of Culture and Science (MKW) of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia has funded the "WiLMo" project with a total of over one million euros. "WiLMo" stands for Business Informatics Learningand TeachingModules. In addition to Fachhochschule Dortmund, the Aachen University of Applied Sciences (applicant), the universities of Bielefeld, Niederrhein and Hamm-Lippstadt and the Cologne University of Applied Sciences were also involved.

Almost 1,200 students are currently enrolled on the Business Information Systems study program at Fachhochschule Dortmund. The study program is a cooperation between the Faculties of Business Studies and Computer Science and can be extended to include an additional practical semester. Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Business Information Systems are possible.
