World climate game for Fachhochschule Dortmund students

Published

The World Climate Game is a board game, simulation game and app game all in one.

Climate policy up close: Fachhochschule Dortmund will be transformed into a global decision-making venue from April 2 to 4. Students from all faculties will have the chance to actively shape the future of our planet in the "World Climate Game". The innovative, app-based board game was developed by Weitblick GmbH in cooperation with experts from various disciplines and puts participants in the role of global decision-makers.

  • Where? Room F 212 at the Sonnenstraße campus
  • When: April 2 to 4, 2025 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Over the course of three days, the game offers a simulation that guides players through important historical and future events from 2000 to 2100. Every decision players make can have an impact on the environment, economy and society. The aim is to achieve the specified climate targets and make the planet sustainable through strategic planning and teamwork.

The World Climate Game is based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and the climate reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and is therefore scientifically sound. It enables participants to grasp the complex interrelationships of global climate policy in a playful way and to develop solution strategies.

Registration is required for participation, and attendance on all three days is a prerequisite for receiving a certificate of participation. This can be a valuable addition to a student's CV. Registration is possible via the form(Opens in a new tab)  or by e-mail to gruendungsservicefh-dortmundde  When registering, please state your study program and current semester. Employees of Fachhochschule Dortmund should state their FH status.

The three dimensions of the game

Events on the board

The game then begins in the year 2000: each game round covers a decade, and after 10 rounds the game ends in the year 2100. In each game round, various tipping points, extreme weather events, environmental disasters and social crises are triggered, depending on the actions of the players. Participants must overcome the challenges and at the same time implement the transition to a sustainable way of life and economy - the fate of humanity is in the hands of the players.

  • Simulation game
Guided by certified game leaders in the field of environmental education and skills development, the participants slip into the roles of actors from politics, business studies and civil society. The different interests and logics of action of the roles are experienced and must be reconciled through compromise and consensus.

  • Board game
In the middle of the room, the giant game board stands like a blue-green jewel floating in space. It shows the state of the world: the gigatons of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the ongoing destruction of nature and ecosystems through land use and extreme weather events, the expanding cities and industrial areas, the humanitarian crises and the knock-on effects of climate change.

  • App and database
In the background, a scientifically based simulation calculates the greenhouse gas circulation. This compares the natural absorption of greenhouse gases by plants and oceans with human emissions. The IPCC report (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) served as the main source for the realistic allocation of greenhouse gases to the various economic sectors and continents. The participants use a web app to control the economic simulation from which the human emissions originate.
