PlagStop.nrw project

PlagStop.nrw is a cooperation project of the Digital University NRW. The aim of the project is to develop digital services for teachers and students to identify and prevent plagiarism.

Project content PlagStop.nrw

The project is being implemented by a consortium of seven universities. The Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences is responsible for project management and coordination. Information on the cooperation project and the consortium can be found on the main project page https://plagstop.dh.nrw/(Opens in a new tab) .

The project comprises three work packages:

1. guidelines for the operation of plagiarism detection software at universities

Plagiarism detection software will be introduced at the participating universities, tested by the teaching staff and evaluated by the project managers. The integration of the plagiarism detection software into the universities' LMS infrastructure and existing workflows will play an important role.

The results will be recorded in a guideline to support other universities in the introduction and optimal operation of plagiarism detection software.

2. creation of materials for the prevention of plagiarism

In order to further sensitize students and lecturers to the topic of plagiarism, digital materials on plagiarism prevention are being developed. This will cover methods and techniques for avoiding plagiarism (literature research, citation methods, dealing with electronic sources) as well as background knowledge on violations of good academic practice (copyright, examination law).

When using plagiarism detection software, it is possible to create a local university database in which all work submitted by the university is stored and can be reused to check for plagiarism in the future. In this way, plagiarism that originates within a university can also be identified. As a result of the networking that goes hand in hand with advancing digitalization, works produced at other universities are also increasingly becoming available as sources. A legal opinion is to clarify whether it is possible to merge several local university databases into a consortium database or to set up a new joint database for the works of the participating universities.
